Taking bull by its horns | | | The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) which was set up by the then Governor Satya Pal Malik led administration in Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2018 has registered 17 cases against the alleged tainted persons the first eight months of this year. The ACB has tightened its noose around the people who till August 5, 2019—when J&K was reorganized—used to believe that they are above the law and no one can touch them. Since the day ACB has got more teeth it has taken the bull by its horns. Besides low rung officials, top officers too have fallen in its net. The politicians, whose kith and kin, had accumulated wealth through different means too are under scanner and are facing the heat. A son of a former minister and a National Conference leader is serving detention for defrauding the Jammu and Kashmir Bank and few other so-called “big shots” are busy trying to save their skin and are maintaining a low profile. Besides giving full powers to the ACB the government has also decided to discard the deadwood from the system. The process to clean the administration has already commenced, the Heads of Departments have been asked to identify the employees whose performance has been below par and have got a dubious track record. There are reports that such officials will be asked to take voluntary retirement to pave the way for creating more vacancies and accommodating the youngsters. Post August 5, 2019, situation in Jammu and Kashmir has changed for the good. The anti-graft agencies are no more under the political pressure. These are working without any influence. On the other hand work culture in the offices too has improved. The officials who used to keep files pending for months together have realized that they cannot continue with their old practices and if they continue to do so they will end up in a soup. Since the day J&K has turned into a Union Territory the Government of India (GoI) has made it clear that J&K’s development is the top priority and the people who can’t deliver will find no place in the system. The war against corruption has intensified during the past one year and it looks like that in coming days many more steps will be taken to make the administrative system more effective and vibrant. The message is clear that what used to happen in the past won’t be tolerated anymore. |
