NC veterans indifferently silent on Omar Abdullah’s erring statements on Art 370 abrogation
Gupkar agreement- Burden around Farooq Abdullah’s neck

Early Times REPORT

JAMMU, Sept 11: Senior leadership of National Conference including the party veterans are maintaining a stoic silence over the recent controversial remarks of NC vice president Omar Abdullah which have become an embalmment of the party’s tectonic shift in its traditional stand.
Omar Abdullah in his September 2, 2020 statement hinted that it was impossible to even think that the special status of Jammu and Kashmir can be restored by the present Modi led government and that he wouldn’t believe in holding demonstrations against the central government’s August 5, 2019 decision.
Meanwhile, none of the senior NC leadership has seconded Omar Abdullah on his statement, hinting at a possible wedge between him and the veteran party leadership. There are even speculations gaining ground that Omar and his party men- the majority of them- aren’t on the same page with him and have cautioned his father who is also, NC patriarch that party’s political future will be in the dock if Omar doesn’t mend his ways.
Among the senior party leaders Ali Mohd Sagar, Abdul Rahim Rather, Mian Altaf, Peer Afaaq, Mubarak Gul, and several others are preferring silence over the ongoing situation and are holding constant closed-door confabulations. “Our political future is hanging in balance. The Urdu adage of Na Idhar Kae Rahe Na Udhar Kae Rahe is perfect to typify our situation. For the Government of India and for the ruling BJP, we are Islamists who are trying to use religion for political gains. On the other side, we for the people on the ground, we have sold our souls and our consciousness and have done a secret pact to barter Jammu and Kashmir’s core interests against petty political gains. We have nowhere to go literally,” says a senior NC functionary.
Last month, Omar Abdullah through his statements that were contrary to the party’s stand on Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, had caused a stir within the party. A senior NC leader and former minister Aga Ruhullah even resigned from his post, accusing the party of moving away from its core ideology.
Omar’s father and NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah in order to keep his flock together held a high-level meeting with the veterans of his party, assuring them that the party will keep fighting for the restoration of the August 4 position. The agenda of the meeting was as per news reports totally focused on discussions for strategy to be adopted for contesting the case filed in the supreme court of the country against abrogation of article 370 and article 35 A and also the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019 Enacted to divide the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state. Even at that time, there were speculations that Dr Farooq Abdullah was playing ball with the center and is leaving a room open for negotiating a deal with it in case the Supreme court turns down the petition filed by the national conference against the decision of the central government on abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, via the presidential order.
The million dollar question now is whether Farooq Abdullah will act as a pacifist to douse the flames of rebellion that are menacingly looming large over the party or he has decided insidiously to handover the steering of the ship to his son.
