Ghotala: Srinagar parking lot leases under scanner as Govt suffers loses!
10/11/2020 12:24:29 AM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 10: The government-owned parking lots in the summer capital here that were leased out have come under scanner for alleged scams in the allotment of the space.
Highly places sources said some of such parking lots were allotted on yearly-basis on minimum bids of around Rs one million per annum by some of the concerned authorities in the summer capital of Srinagar.
Sources said the lease had expired during the Covid lockdown but that the parking lots continue to work for the private parties, who are making earn extra profits.
Sources said some such parking places at busy places, especially along the world famous Dal lake, did huge business even during the lockdown. “If you will go through the past few months, the Boulevard on the banks of Dal lake was infamous for huge rush of vehicles that would go there for outing and would be parked at such parking lots against parking fee. Same was true for some parking lots in city center as well,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
He said the “informal extension” to run parking lot gave additional business to some influential private players in Kashmir who had taken the lease. “They (parking lessees)earned big money even after the expiry of the lease but by putting the government to undue losses,” the officials said.
They said such leased parking lots have been so profitable that a lobby of businessmen is trying to get the previous lease extended.
“Basically such businessmen know that bidding for such sites will be big and thus they want to continue with the business on the old or to say low rates, which is loss to the government,” said a senior official.
He said the concerned officials were looking ahead to go for such deals with the businessmen in league with some urban local body representatives.
“Any such deal of extension will not only be a fraud but will lead to loss to government exchequer,” said a senior official.
When contacted a senior official said they have inputs that some senior officials were trying to extend the deal.
“The matter will be looked into,” he said.
Meanwhile the potential contractors who were willing to bid for the new lease for such lots have appealed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to look into the matte
