BJP criticizes regional parties for ignoring local bodies
10/16/2020 12:26:08 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 15: Congress and regional parties like National Conference (NC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) clinged to power at the cost of local bodies and never cared to decentralise powers.
This was the reason why these parties never implemented 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendment Act in Jammu and Kashmir, and kept elected institutions marginalized in Jammu and Kashmir. This was stated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) J&K Executive Member Raman Suri, who added that now the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has asked departments to prepare proposal to transfer powers to Jammu as well as Srinagar Municipal Corporations as well as other local bodies in order to empower the grassroot levels, so that people can decide about their own fate and become partner in developmental activities.
Raman Suri said that abrogation of Article 370 has given J&K its due share and its because of this great decision that the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments are being considered to be implemented here now.
Besides, several other laws of India and provisions of the Constitution of India, which were blocked because of special status under Article 370, are now being implemented here. These are going to transform the state and empower the democratic institutions, thereby bringing welfare in the lives of people, he added. He accused Congress, PDP and NC of depriving the J&K people of their right to live with dignity and become decision makers, by either not holding elections to local bodies or not empowering them in real sense. Dummy institutions were created without any powers and when they completed their terms, these parties didn’t hold elections to them. This was all done deliberately by Congress, NC and PDP, only to enjoy powers and keep local bodies at their mercy. Had these parties been sincere in giving people their due share, they would have empowered Municipal Corporations, Town Area Committees and Municipal Committees besides Panchayats. Since they wanted to cling to power and spend public money at their own will, they ensured that all these institutions are run by remote control through Housing and Urban Developments Department (H&UDD) and Rural Development Department (RDD).
Now that BJP Government at the Centre has abrogated Article 370 and extended all central laws to J&K, implementation of 73rd and 74th amendment of constitution is round the corner, after which elected institutions will be fully empowered and will start working for the welfare of people independently. Raman Suri said that BJP Government at the Centre is going to bring J&K at par with other parts of India in terms of development, after which employment will be generated and development will transform the Union Territory.
