Youth Congress holds protest against installation of smart meters | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 12: Expressing their grave resentment over the installation of pre-paid/post-paid electric meters in Ward No 4 in Jammu East Assembly constituency, a large number of people held a protest dharna in front of PDD office, Parade today. Led by Jammu District President Youth Congress Rahul Tandon, the protesters including hundreds of traders raised slogans against the Power Development Department for its move to install smart electric meters. The protest also led to a disruption of vehicular movement in Parade area for some time. Addressing the protestors, Rahul Tandon appealed the Lt Governor to ask the PDD authorities not to implement the installation of the pre, post, smart meters on the PDD connections. He warned the Govt that if the installation of smart, pre-paid/post-paid meters in Jammu doesn't stopped then we will start agitation as this is a black law which the govt is imposing on the people of the state and particularly on the people of Jammu. He said BJP union power minister along with the previous BJP PDD Minister Dr Nirmal Singh approved and passed this bill without looking into its pros and cons. He said the people of our state belong to middle class and below poverty line families and they cannot afford this system. Residents of Ward No 4 and Youth Congress leaders also submitted a memorandum. The delegation also asked the government to waive off three months of electricity bill for the lockdown period on humanitarian grounds, as a large number of people lost their jobs. The consumers also demanded that billing should be done on monthly basis so that bills are not calculated at the highest slab. |
