Hundreds of vehicles leave Jammu for Srinagar on Kashmir highway, Mughal road shut
11/26/2020 3:01:15 PM

Srinagar, Nov 26 : Hundreds of vehicles left Jammu for Kashmir early in the morning as only one-way traffic continue to ply on the 270-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the road connecting the valley with the rest of the country.

However, historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, remained closed since Monday morning following slippery road conditions due to accumulation of snow.

“One-way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar was plying normally on Thursday even as there was major improvement in the weather after rain and snow for about three days,” a traffic police official told UNI.

He said the on Friday no vehicular traffic will be allowed on the highway due to weekly maintenance and repair of the road.

The historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, remained closed for traffic for the fourth successive day due to accumulation of snow. Traffic on the road was recently restored after remaining suspended for four days due to snowfall.
“The road, seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu highway, remained closed due to slippery conditions because of snowfall since Monday,” he said.
The road was being used to transport fresh fruit from Kashmir valley to different mandis, including in Jammu after frequent closure of the highway this summer. “Snow clearance has been started following improvement in the weather,” he said, adding traffic will be resumed only after a green signal is received from traffic police civil administration official posted at different places on the road, which remains closed for about six winter months due to heavy snowfall
