Jammu colleges without journalism courses, Kashmir institutions continue to train students

JAMMU, Jan 3: Though the pro-active approach of Union as well as Lieutenant Governor led Union Territory administration has compelled the administration to withdraw posts of Agriculture Extension Officers (AEO), following the allegations of discrimination with Jammu region, hopes have been raised over ending the decades’ old discrimination as degree colleges in Kashmir valley have been offering journalism course since decades while Jammu based colleges are still bereft of it.
The offering of journalism courses at Under-graduate level, means posts of Assistant Professors in the subject have been created only for Kashmir region and ultimately the youth from Kashmir region got jobs and not the Jammu region youth.
According to sources the Kashmir University has been offering Post Graduation in the subject of Journalism and Mass Communication since last over four decades, while at Under-graduate level, in three Government Degree Colleges, affiliated with Kashmir University, undergraduate courses have been running since over two decades.
Moreover the Islamic University as well as Central University of Kashmir have also been offering Post Graduation in Journalism while in case of Jammu, the only Post Graduation course was launched by Central University of Jammu, that too in the year 2014 but so far Jammu University has failed to introduce the subject at Post Graduation level.
Sources informed Early Times that though University of Jammu has been mooting to start the Post-Graduation course in Journalism and Mass Communication since last over two decades but the proposal failed to see daylight due to reasons, linked with the Kashmir centric political leadership and administrative decision making at erstwhile State level.
“Under a well-planned conspiracy, journalism and Mass Communication courses were not introduced in Jammu University along with Jammu based colleges. At one hand the Kashmir based youth get jobs at academic level as the posts of Assistant Professors in Higher Education are reserved for Kashmir valley youth. On the other hand the common Kashmiris especially the youth have more media literacy. It helped the Kashmir centric lobby to highlight the Kashmir centric discourse at national as well as international platform, while the discourse of Jammu remained confined to Jammu only”, a senior teaching faculty said.
He further added that one cardinal reason for the vibrant media industry of Kashmir valley was the beginning of journalism courses in Kashmir University as well as at Under-graduate level. “The vibrant media sphere in valley makes the reach of Kashmir issue and their politics global while the Jammu region, despite being large in geography, remained confined to region only”, he said, adding that the Union government as well as Lieutenant Governor led administration should take cognizance of the matter and take corrective steps.
Another Jammu based official said that if journalism courses would be introduced in Jammu University and their affiliated Government Degree Colleges it would open up new employment avenues for qualified youth, as well as help to amplify Jammu based discourse, which would counter the Kashmir centric discourse at national as well as international level.
