Centre's directions receive hope of Basmati getting GI tag | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 8: Direction of the Union Government to all departments of the Union Territory of J&K has revived hopes that traditional Basmati to Jammu will get Geographical Indications (GI) tagging. After Saffron of the Kashmir received GI tag, Basmati growers of Jammu were feeling cheated as they were also demanding same tagging to popularize their products in the international market. On Friday, Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued a circular No 01-IND of 2021 dated 08-01-2021 in which all departments of J&K UT were directed to furnish details of items which require Geographical Indications registration under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999. Geographical Indication or GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. These are typically used for Agricultural Products, Food stuffs, Handicrafts and Industrial Products. "As a part of the efforts to protect the local goods known for their qualities and reputation, 09 items from Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have Geographical Indications registration. More are many goods which require protection so as to avoid counter branding of the same.", the order reads as. The order further reads as "Therefore, it is enjoined upon all the Administrative Secretaries to furnish details of items which require Geographical Indications registration with Industries and Commerce Department, so that same is shared with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India". |
