Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 16: The teaching staff of the University of Kashmir is all set to receive a windfall since the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has almost given a green signal towards the enhancement of retirement age of the teachers at the varsity.
Sources told Early Times that enhancement of retirement age of the teaching faculty was one of the agenda points of 81st Kashmir University Council meet that was held on February 11 at Raj Bhavan, Jammu. Sinha, who is the Chancellor of University of Kashmir, chaired the meeting with the main agenda being enhancement of retirement age of professors although the other agendas also came up for discussion.
“Chancellor has almost given his nod to the proposal of enhancement of retirement age of the teaching staff of the University of Kashmir and the retirement age will be 65 years instead of 62 years. Although, the retirement age of government employees is 60 years, but there is no such bar for the teaching faculty at the University of Kashmir,” said sources.
Sources said that no consideration has been given towards the demand of enhancing the age of non-teaching employees and officers of the varsity from 60 years to 62 years.
They said that although non-teaching employees and officers hold pivotal position at the varsity campus, but still then there has been no enhancement of their retirement age.
“Three decades back the retirement age of the government employees was 55 years while the same for the university employees was 58 years. Over the years the government enhanced the retirement age of its employees from 55 years to 58 years while in case of university officers and employees from 58 to 60 years. This included the teachers of the varsity as well,” said sources.
Sources said that in 2014 Omar Abdullah (then chief minister) pro-chancellor of University of Kashmir enhanced the retirement age of state employees from 58 years to 60 years and it was proposed to enhance the retirement age of university employees from 60 years to 62 years. The proposal was moved for the same and it was to be placed before University Council, but at the last moment Ex-Registrar made changes in the proposal.
“The former Registrar wrote university teachers instead of university employees and got approved the enhancement of retirement age of teachers only and not for all the university employees from 60 to 62 years. It is an irony that two strong associations of varsity KUMSA & KUOA which represent 80 percent employees of the varsity have no representation in university’s highest decision body university council,” said sources.
Sources said that KUTA which represents 20 percent employee strength has representation in university council with their president being the council member and on most of the occasions the Association calls the shots. The latest move is bound to further alienate KUMSA and KUOA from the system with the teaching faculty enjoying with nothing in store for the non-teaching staff.
