NC Accepts Defeat
2/18/2021 11:04:02 PM

National Conference seems to have accepted defeat even before the battle has commenced. The party has decided to disassociate itself from the proceedings of the Delimitation Commission set up to redraw Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir.
The delimitation exercise would empower Jammu as it will get equal share in the assembly. Till August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to bifurcate J&K into two union territories and scrapped its special status—Kashmir had an upper hand as the number of assembly seats were more than Jammu.
For the past 70-years, Kashmir centric leaders didn’t allow any Dogra leader from Jammu to become the chief minister of J&K by claiming that Kashmir sends more members to the assembly than Jammu. However, after J&K’s reorganization situation has changed and once the delimitation is completed Jammu will be brought at par with Kashmir.
The National Conference has been opposing the delimitation exercise from the very first day as it knows that now the party cannot dictate terms. The NC leaders are aware of the fact that Jammu is all set to get empowered and there is every possibility of a leader from Jammu region holding Chief Minister’s post for the first time since 1947.
The NC, which used to claim that it’s a secular party, stands at crossroads at least in Jammu region as by opting out of the delimitation exercise it has proven it beyond doubt that it’s a Kashmir centric party and is least bothered about Jammu and its aspirations. During the past few years the base of NC has been eroded in Jammu region due to its biased approach towards the people of this region.
The National Conference leaders should bear in mind that they staying away from delimitation exercise won’t make any big difference as the exercise will continue and the Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies will be redrawn.
The NC leaders by refusing to be a part of the delimitation exercise are trying to create a notion that they are doing a favour to Kashmir but the fact is that it’s just a drama to mislead the people. They are aware of the fact that they cannot win any seats in Jammu so it’s better to focus on the Valley.
