Srinagar, Oct 13: A top Jaish-e-Mohammad militant was killed in South Kashmir's Awantipora during an encounter with security forces on Wednesday, police said.
The gunfight broke out in Tilwani Mohalla of Tral region when a team of joint forces launched a cordon and search operation following an input about militant presence.
"One terrorist has been killed so far. The operation is underway," a police officer said.
Kashmir's Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar identified the slain terrorist as top Jaish e Mohammad commander Sham Sofi.
The gunfight at Tral broke a day after five militants were killed in two separate gunfights in South Kashmir' s Shopian district. |
