Winning start by Dental College Sehora, ASCOMS women
Inter-College Badminton competitions get underway

JAMMU, Sep 6: Dental College Sehora and Acharya Shri Chandra College of Medical Sciences (ASCOMS) made a winning start in women’s section in the annual inter-college badminton tournament, organised by Department of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu on the campus, here today.
In the first match of the day, Dental College Sehora trounced Government Degree College Akhnoor 2-0 to move into the next round of pre-quarterfinals. In the singles, Romana defeated Jyoti Sharma in straight but close sets. Later, in the doubles, the pair of Romana and Neepu overpowered Rekha and Ruby again in straight sets 21-11, 21-14.
In another women’s match of the day, ASCOMS registered a 2-0 win over GL Dogra College 2-0. Chandpreet Kour beat Varuna in straight sets 21-12, 21-14 in singles to give the side 1-0 lead. Playing a crucial role in college’s win, Chandpreet pairing with Prachi Dubey registered a 2-0 (21-10, 21-14) win over Varna and Taruna in the doubles match.
Today’s matches were officiated by Ravish Vaid, Vikram Jamwal, Rakesh Verma and Nisha under the overall supervision of Ramesh Magotra.
The Detailed Results: PG Departments got walkover Government Women College Udhampur; New Age College Billawar got walkover Government Degree College Udhampur; Dental College bt Degree Collge Akhnoor; ASCOMS bt GL Dogra College.
Walkovers dominate men’s badminton
Out of the five matches, four ended in walkovers in first round of men’s badminton. The only match played today was between Dogra Law College and Government Degree College Ramnagar wherein former emerged winner 3-0.
The Detailed Results: GGM Science College got walkover Government Degree College Rajouri; Government Degree College Udhampur got walkover Law School; MAM (E)College got walkover Degree College Bani; SPMR College of Commerce got walkover Kawa Institute; Dogra Law College bt Degree College Ramnagar.
Encouraging Response
This year’s inter-college badminton competitions turned out to be encouraging with a number of teams participating for the first time. These included Dental College Sehora, Akhnoor Degree College Akhnoor. However, the hosts University of Jammu continues to take this annual event lightly with Law School failed to turn up for the competition.
