Omar’s shredded body aches for 109 `martyrs’ | Who is to own responsibility? | | Content Analysis Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 1: Omar sounded more like a separatist yesterday in the Legislative Assembly. Rejecting politicization of the recent killings in Kashmir, he used highly `loaded’ words in his speech. Describing those killed in the ongoing unrest as ‘martyrs’, he said he would be happy to see these ‘sacrifices’ fetching benefit to the state. “I am sadder than anybody else. Over these 109 deaths, I feel my body has been torn into 109 pieces,” he said. “There is no harm if those involved in these killings are hanged but I would be happier when these sacrifices would get Jammu and Kashmir some benefit. My pain is more than that of Mahbooba Mufti and others. I feel as if somebody put his gun on my chest and fired at me”, he added.
Omar’s highly emotional speech forced even his worst critics to appreciate his oratory skills but some questions arise. Who takes responsibility for the killings? Who gave a free hand to the men in uniform? Who sought additional CRPF companies from New Delhi to restore order? The young Abdullah tried to escape responsibility by stating “There is no harm if those involved in these killings are hanged.” Two months ago when Early Times wrote that Omar cannot even shift a CRPF company from one place to another, an official spokesman responded immediately and denied the allegation. He said the government was exercising total control over the Para-military troops. This statement conveys a lot and needs no further explanation.
It seems, the Chief Minister had done a lot of home work for yesterday’s speech. He posed a question to evade an answer to the most important question. “Why people got killed, I will reply on that if discussion over the issue takes place. Allegations were leveled against me, I will reply to all during the discussion,” he added. The youngest Chief Minister of the state knows the discussion will never take place. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decided to boycott the proceedings. Congress is part of the government and others have different problems and limitations. And, National Conference knows how to crush dissenting voices in the house.
Omar’s body, as per his own statement, has been torn into 109 pieces. Has he tried to hear any one of the 109 unheard voices that emanate from his broken heart? Thanks to the police, the emotional speech went in vain. All the newspapers that carried the speech in detail were seized by the men in uniform for unknown reasons in wee hours this morning.
