Blind murder solved; wife, paramour among 4 held
11/9/2010 11:01:24 PM
ET REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 9: Cracking a blind murder case, Surankote police have arrested the victim's wife, her paramour and their two associates. The man was murdered as his wife wanted to marry her paramour which could be possible only after they got rid of him, police sources said.
The killing was very cleverly attributed to militants, the sources added. On September 5 last, Khurshida Begum lodged a report with the Surankote police station that three militants had on September 3 night abducted her husband Mohammad Khurshid Kohli from their residence at Morha Bachai on gun point.
Acting on the complaint, police had registered a case and launched searches in the Morha Bachai woods in search for Kohli. On September 12, Kohli's body was found floating in Suran river at Phagla, Surankote. The body was fished out by police and removed to the hospital mortuary.
Sources said as no bullet wound was found on the body, police got suspicious and started investigations into the case. A special police team was constituted by SSP, Poonch, Manmohan Singh, under the supervision of DSP, Surankote, Perveet Singh Parihar to hold an indepth probe into the whole episode. During the course of investigation, Surankote police station SHO, Inspector Farooq Hussain Shah and his junior Muneer Shah seized Khurshida's cellphone and found that she was in regular touch with Mohammad Iqbal, a government school teacher, of Pathana Teer, Mendhar.
Khurshida and Iqbal, who was posted at Salwa, were then picked up by police for questioning. Sources said their sustained grilling led police to the solving of the blind murder which otherwise had been attributed to militants. Quoting Khurshida, who has four children, the eldest being 13 years, sources said Iqbal wanted to marry her and had even asked her to divorce her husband.
When Kohli refused to divorce her, the duo allegedly decided to get rid of him, the sources added. To kill Kohli, Iqbal hired the services of his neighbours -- Mehmood Hussain Shah and Khushal Hussain Shah -- and promised to pay them Rs 30,000 after the work was over. Sources said on September 3 night, Iqbal, Mehmood and Khushal came to Kohli's residence and abducted him. They took him towards the Suran river and allegedly gave him a sound beating as a result of which he died, the sources added, saying the body was thrown by them into the river. The accused had allegedly confessed to have murdered Kohli. Police had arrested them all and booked them in a murder case, the sources added.
