Offer funeral prayers for Osama: Geelani | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 5: In a significant development Hurriyat (G) Syed Ali Shah geelani has urged then people to offer Gayibana Nimaz-e-Jinaza funeral prayer in absentia) to slain Al Qaeda chief, Osama bin Laden after congregational prayers Friday. Osama got killed in an operation by US troops at Abbotabad , Pakistan recently. The appeal has come as a surprise to the people of Kashmir because the elderly leader has been publickly condemning the 9/11 attacks. Geelani issued a statement describing Osama a martyr and a symbol of resistance against America. This was the first time when a Kashmiri leader openly owned Osama. Justifying his stand, Geelani said : “After Osama’s death, it has become obligatory on us to pray for the slain Al Qaeda chief. All Muslims across the globe are brothers. It's the duty of every Muslim to pray for forgiveness and for the best hereafter life for the departed soul of a Muslim.”
Geelani said that Osama was not just a name of a person ‘but of an ideology and thinking against occupation of Muslim lands by foreigners.’Geelani also urged the clergy to pray for liberation of Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kashmir. “The Muslims are sufferins in these countries. Nobody can stop us from praying for them”, he said. The Hurriyat chairman had plans to address a congregation at Batmaloo Friday. He was also supposed to lead the funeral prayersfor Osama at Batmaloo. However, the police placed Geelani under house arrest late this evening. A senior police officer said that adequate security arrangements shall be made to deal with any eventuality. Batmaloo is considered a strong bastion of Geelani. During last year’s agitation curfew was strictly enforced in the area. Several youth including a 9th year-old boy and a girl got killed in the area. Geelani’s presence in the area, therefore, can pull large crowd. Surprisingly the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah ruled out connections between Hizbul Mujahideen andal Qaeda yesterday in one of his tweets. The police chief has also repeatedly denied Al Qaeda presence in Kashmir. Even the staunch hardliners in Kashmir have also distanced themselves from osama and Al Qaeda. Geelani’s statement, according to Kashmir watchers shall have far reaching consequences on Kashmir issue.
