Producers resent DD's patronage of tainted officials

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 17: Massive resentment is growing among freelance television producers and artists against Prasar Bharti's policy of protecting tainted officials of Doordarshan in Jammu & Kashmir.
DD's Directorate General, Prasar Bharti and Ministry of Information & Broadcasting are still groping in the dark with regard to appointment of a non-controversial and dedicated official as Director of Doordrashan Kendra (DDK) Srinagar. Even as Dr Rafeeq Masoodi has been relieved, finally with a note of urgency, DD has not appointed any official to head one of the oldest stations in Srinagar.
Completing a formality as per the tradition, Masoodi has handed over his charge to the senior most Deputy Director (Programme), Shammi Shair. According to insiders, Ms Shair had an organisational clout in New Delhi but the authorities were apprehensive of resentment in the event of appointing her as Director of DDK Srinagar. Breaking many records of staying on a particular position without change for over 18 years, Ms Shair has not only assumed the charge but also banned entry of a several private producers and artists into the DDK premises.
She has remained continuously posted at DDK Srinagar since 1993. Orders of her transfer were issued intermittently, at least three times in the last 18 years, but each time she managed to stay put. She has firmly stuck to her chair even as she stands transferred to another station in north India. Sources said that since the day of her assuming the charge of Director of DDK Srinagar, Ms Shair has been processing the records of her omissions and commissions without any fear or hesitation. She has been facing charges of wanton irregularities in the funds provided by union Ministry of Agriculture for the daily farming programme 'Krishi Darshan'.
"There is absolutely no accountability among the DD and AIR officials in J&K as each of them has godfathers in New Delhi. Director of Leh station of DD, Rajinder Singh Rana, has not been allowed to return to his hometown of Srinagar even as he has undergone a major surgery and is reaching superannuation within a month now. On the other hand, Ms Shair has been given the charge of Director of DDK Srinagar though she has already completed 18 years of her posting at one place. It's all nonsense", said an eminent producer. According to him, Ms Shair had been given an opportunity to tamper with and clear all records of previous involvement in irregularities.
