`Differentiate between Azadi and mundane issues' | Right to protest | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 22: Even as New Delhi's nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir sought right to protest for the people in their interim report, the state government continues to use force even against people agitating mundane issues. A few days ago, the police stormed rallies of government employees at various places in the summer capital. The police first used coloured water canons against the employees who were reminding the government of their promises. The canons turned parts of Lal Chowk violet as the canons spilled colour on roads, walls and on the hapless employees. However, when the employees offered resistance, the police swung into action and did what they have been doing for the past six decades. The employees were beaten to pulp. Some of them were even taken into custody. A few days earlier, the protesting contractual lecturers met the same fate. They were cane charged and arrested. They were demanding regularization of their services which by no means is an anti-national demand. On July 15, the police used force against Peoples Democratic (PDP) workers who were demanding release of political prisoners. Scores sustained injuries and four workers were taken into custody. Concerned citizens urge the government to show tolerance. "The government has to draw a line. It has to differentiate between pro-Azadi rallies and protests for mundane issues. There must be some space for dissent in a democratic set up", said a teacher. During last year's summer agitation around 120 people got killed. New Delhi was forced to appoint interlocutors. The interlocutors submitted their interim report this year. They have recommended right to protest to the people of the state. This statement tells a lot about coalition's governance. It conveys that right to protest does not exist in Jammu Kashmir and it in a way held the `intolerant' government responsible for the killings. |
