JAMMU, July 22: The emotive issue of setting up of Central University in Jammu is once again gathering momentum in the winter capital of the state.
For past several days the students of GGM Science College and Commerce College have been agitating over the undue delay caused in finalising the name of the Vice Chancellor and kick starting the process of setting up of the university campus.
On Friday as the students boycotted their classes and gathered once again outside the Science College campus to take out a protest rally, however, the policemen deployed there first tried to prevent their assembly and later as they began shouting slogans and came out on the road the police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the assembly of students.
The situation went out of control on the busy canal road area forcing the shopkeepers to down their shutters.
As the students tried to take out a protest rally but heavy deployment of police restricted their movement. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the gathering following which students pelted stones.
The ding dong battles went on for about two hours in which nine people, including four policemen were injured. One of the students received grievous injury in the clash. Three vehicles and two shops were also damaged.
The student leaders alleged that police cane charged them, and beat them mercilessly while they were trying to take out a peaceful protest march.
Amid "anti-government" slogans, students alleged that 30 Central Universities were sanctioned by the Centre, including each for Jammu and Kashmir but no vice-chancellor has been appointed so far for Jammu as when other universities have almost completed their first session.
"We are holding protest demonstrations for the last one-month demanding set up of the Central University in Jammu viz-a-viz the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor. Despite the fact, there was no response from the state government," Pushpinder Singh Manhas, president, National Panthers Student Union, said.
He alleged that the government forced students to adopt the path of violence and the agitation would be intensified in the coming days if the demands would not be met.
It may be mentioned that the Central University for Jammu was sanctioned more than two years ago, it has not been set up because the union human resource ministry has not appointed a vice chancellor, and the one who was appointed declined to join citing personal reasons.
Prof Amitabh Mattoo, a former vice chancellor of Jammu University, was appointed the first vice chancellor of the Central University, Jammu, in December last year. However, a group of Jammu political parties opposed his appointment and backed out on personal grounds joining another assignment in Australia.
