BJP leadership appears to be blissfully ignorant | Khar-Separatists meet | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 29: J&K unit of the BJP did make a valid point day before yesterday, when it took on the Congress-led UPA government for allowing a meeting between the visiting Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at New Delhi even before talks between her and Foreign Minister SM Krishna were held. It made another valid point when it said that meeting between Hina and separatists was ill-conceived and ill-motivated. Indeed, the meeting between Hina and the Kashmiri separatists constituted a "breach of protocol." But it has been happening since long. It happened even during the BJP regime. The fact of the matter is that neither the Congress nor the BJP has done anything to defeat the Pakistani evil intentions. It is because of the weak-kneed policies of New Delhi that Pakistan and the Kashmiri separatists have been able to promote their anti-India line from the Indian capital itself. However, the state BJP made a mockery of itself when it said that "it seems the Foreign Minister of Pakistan had planned in advance to discuss with Kashmir separatist leaders their viewpoint and receive their inputs before talking to the Union Foreign Minister." It appears the BJP leadership was blissfully ignorant about what Islamabad did on July 19. Hina was administered the oath of office on July 19 as Pakistan's full-fledged Foreign Minister. That day, the Pakistan's Foreign Office issued a press statement, which, inter-alia-read: "Before meeting Krishna, she (Hina) will have…frank advisory consultations over various aspects of unsettled Kashmir dispute with the top Kashmiri leaders from Srinagar, including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Yasin Malik." "She would meet them on July 26 evening" and "Kashmiri leaders have already been informed by Pakistan High Commission of Foreign Minister Hina Khar's meeting with them," the official statement issued also said. This shows that everything was pre-planned and that everything was also in public domain. It needs to be underlined that the Indian media had published the official statement quite prominently. It is, however, a different matter that neither the Indian Foreign Office tried to scuttle the Pakistani move nor the BJP raised the issue on time. The Congress-led UPA Government bungled by allowing the meeting to take place and the BJP bungled by sleeping over the issue when it was required to act and defeat the Pakistani move. But the fact is that the BJP was not aware of what Pakistani Foreign Office had official said through a press release. Hence, where is the question of demanding a probe into the circumstances under which the meeting between Khar and Kashmiri separatists took place? The BJP once again missed the buss. Why? The BJP would do well to explain its position. The concerned people would appreciate the BJP leadership if it does so. For, they want it to discharge its obligations to the nation. |
