EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 6: Congress veteran and former Union Minister Dr Karan Singh, who had once suggested that the Central University should be established at Bhadrwah and had kept mum till the other day, has suddenly become active and appealed to the agitating student community to call of their strike because the over a month-old strike over the Central University issue has adversely impacted the educational institutions in Jammu, including the University of Jammu and several colleges, located in Jammu province.
Appealing to the determined and committed agitating student community, he yesterday said that "he is in touch with Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal" (commentators like Jay Dubashi call Sibal a "clown" and Manmohan Singh a "flunkey") and that "a suitable person would be appointed Vice-Chancellor very soon." His refrain was that withdrawal of agitation was a must for creating a "conducive atmosphere" in Jammu so that the "university is established."
Neither the people of Duggar Pradesh nor the Dogra student community would appreciate Dr Karan Singh's intervention because the Congress leaders has, instead of taking NC-Congress coalition government and Kapil Sibal to task for forcing the Dogra youth to start an agitation over an issue that had been settled almost two years ago, virtually held the student community responsible for the delay in the establishment of the Central University. His intervention would surely add more fuel to the fire. The Dogras have already started questioning their leaders like "Dr Karan Singh and others of his ilk who", according to then, "break their silence only when their masters in New Delhi ask them to intervene so that the cause of Jammu is defeated." It is for Dr Karan Singh to ponder over what has made the suffering Dogras to look down upon his and similar other Dogra leaders, Delhi-based or otherwise.
If the questionable intervention of Dr Karan Singh has raised several questions and further added to the Jammu's anger, the August 5 statement of what could be termed as unpopular, directionless, issueless, faction-ridden and politically bankrupt J&K BJP leadership has come as a bolt from the blue. The statement of the BJP leadership that the party "would be compelled to launch an all-out offensive" in case the authorities fail to make the university functional till August 25 was as meaningless as it was unwarranted. Why August 25? What is sacrosanct about it? Perhaps, the BJP leadership feels that the authorities would concede the demands of the student community by that time.
The BJP leadership, which maintained a very long distance from the agitating students community for so long and took the plunge in the movement through press releases after feeling the heat generated by the effective and inspiring student community, has simply exposed itself and its weaknesses and established that it is just not capable of playing any role whatever in the Duggar Pradesh's political arena. What has amused the agitating student community and its supporters, whose number is multiplying manifold day by day, all the more was the BJP's suggestion that "BJP has always stood for the just cause of Jammu and, therefore, will continue to offer full support, unconditional and all kind of support to all groups and parties in their struggle for the cause of Central University in Jammu." This part of the statement amused everyone for two reasons.
One, the BJP leadership in the state would only extend support to the agitating people and not lead the agitation because it has nothing in its kitty to offer to the people. In other words, the statement urged the people to set the agenda and suggested that its only contribution would be to the extent that it would offer support to those setting the agenda subject to the condition that it would extend support only when it feels that the time is appropriate. The other was that the "BJP has always stood for the just cause of Jammu." (To be continued)
