Divide the state to fulfill aspirations of Jammu | Unnatural Wedlock | | Rustam Jammu, Aug 24: One can very easily understand the reasons behind the opposition in Kashmir to the demand in Jammu and Ladakh for the state's trifurcation. One of the reasons is that Kashmir and Kashmiri leadership want to stregthen their stranglehold over them and exploit the people of these two unfortunate and abandoned regions. But one fails to understand the reasons behind the reported opposition of the Jammu-based Congress leaders and ministers to the very genuine demand in Jammu and Ladakh for the state's trifurcation into Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh States. Their opposition is misplaced. They are still groping in the dark and suggesting unacceptable and unworkable solutions. It is unfortunate. Some of the Jammu-based ministers and leaders have reportedly put forth a solution to the problems being faced by the people of Jammu and Ladakh provinces. Opposing the demand for the trifurcation of the state, these leaders have acknowledged that the people of Jammu and Ladakh have been given a raw deal by the successive governments in the state and, at the same time, urged New Delhi to respect the aspirations of the people of these two provinces while working out a solution to the so-called Kashmir problem. Their solution is as flawed as it is utterly unacceptable. For, the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Ladakh and Kashmir are contradictory and mutually exclusive. There is nothing that is common between Jammu and Kashmir and between Kashmir and Ladakh. On the contrary, the story of relations between Jammu and Kashmir and between Kashmir and Ladakh is one of bitterness, animosity and an extreme form of hatred. The demand put forth by sections of the people of Jammu and Ladakh are based on a sound logic. They want freedom from Kashmir for two basic reasons. One is that they have suffered immense losses during all these 64 years of the Kashmiri rule in the state and that they continue to receive a step-motherly treatment even today, notwithstanding the fact that the Congress has been sharing power with the Kashmir-based party since November 2002. First it shared power with the out-and-out Valley-centric and separatist-friendly and now it is sharing power with the NC, which is no different from that of the . In fact, the attitude of NC towards Jammu is more hostile. The other is that the people of Jammu and Ladakh are bitterly opposed to the demands in Kashmir for Pakistan, independence, greater autonomy and self-rule. Not just this, they are also opposed to the provocative and anti-national demands in Kashmir for the withdrawal of the Army and paramilitary forces and revocation of or dilution in the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The fact of the matter is that Jammu and Ladakh represent one strand that is rational, national, secular and democratic and Kashmir represents another strand that is communal, undemocratic, primitive and unaccommodating. It would be only appropriate to say that the people of Jammu and Ladakh and Kashmiri leadership represent two diametrically opposed ideologies. The differences and contradiction between the two are so sharp that they could not be ironed out and reconciled. For example, while the people of Jammu and Ladakh have been consistently struggling to link their political and economic future with New Delhi, the Kashmiri leaders, without any exceptions, have been consistently seeking a dispensation utside the political and constitutional organization of India. How can anyone reconcile this contradiction? No one can. The Jammu-based Congress leaders and ministers must recognize this hard fact and refashion their whole approach towards Jammu and Ladakh. The best thing for them to do would be to extend unflinching support to those seeking trifurcation/reorganization of the state. Trifurcation of the state is the only lasting solution to the Jammu problem as well as Ladakh problem. They represent Jammu; they must advocate the Jammu cause, and the only way they could serve the Jammu cause well is by snapping ties with the NC and jumping on to the trifurcation/reorganization bandwagon. |
