Kashmir doesn't have any mainstream politician
Hanging Of Guru

JAMMU, Sep 4: Bulk of the Indian media and the parties like the Congress, the CPI, the CPI-M, the BJP, to mention only a few, term the NC and the PDP Kashmiri leadership as mainstream leadership. Their view is based on the fact that the NC and the PDP are not demanding secession. It is also based on the premise that the NC and the PDP demand solution to the so-called Kashmir problem within the framework of the Indian Constitution. The media and the parties like the Congress and the BJP are absolutely wrong. Their whole assessment is flawed and misplaced. The fact is that both the NC and the PDP have been indulging in soft secessionism ever since their formation. These formations are far more dangerous as compared to the Hurriyat Conference of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Tehrik-i-Hurriyat of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the JKLF of Yasin Malik and Democratic Freedom Party of Shabbir Shah.
These are dangerous because they are part of the establishment. They are wrecking the Constitution and the polity both from within and outside in a systematic way and meticulously. The NC is ruling the state and the PDP is the main opposition party in the state. The NC, everyone knows, stands for the pre-1953 position. This means the NC stands for a system that is outside the political and constitutional organization of India. In fact, it stands for quasi-independence on the ground that Kashmir is a Muslim-majority zone and its identity cannot be preserved in a democratic and secular India.
As for the PDP, it not only stands for the pre-1953 position but it also stands for a solution that equates Pakistan with India and gives Islamabad co-equal powers with New Delhi so that the Indian sovereignty in the Indian Jammu and Kashmir is shared by the two countries. The PDP terms its formulation in this regard as supra-state measure.
In fact, the NC and the PDP are the two sides of one and the same coin. The only difference between the two is that the NC doesn't talk in terms of supra-state measures. And, still bulk of the Indian media and the Delhi-based political class term the NC and the PDP as mainstream formations. So much so that both the Congress and the BJP have shared power with the NC. The Congress continues to share power with the NC both in the state as well as New Delhi even today and it had also shared power with the PDP. Not only this, the Congress had handed over the state power to the PDP in the name of what the AICC president Sonia Gandhi described as the "larger national interest". She also handed over the state power to the NC on a platter in 2009 saying she was sacrificing the chief minister's office for the sake of national interest. Everyone knows how these two Kashmir-based formations have protected and advanced further the national interest.
That Kashmir doesn't have a single mainstream Kashmiri leader could be seen from the stand the Kashmiri separatists like Geelani and the formations like the NC and the PDP, plus Kashmiri legislators like Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid, have taken on Afzal Guru, convicted in the Parliament terrorist attack case. The separatist Geelani and the so- called mainstream Kashmiri leader are one as far as their stand on Afzal Guru is concerned. They want New Delhi to accept the clemency petition of Guru.
Will media and Delhi-based political class review their stand on the parties like the NC and the PDP and create an environment that induces the Election Commission of India to derecognize such organizations that claim that they are mainstream but preach sedition or attack the Indian Constitution saying the Indian statute book is anti-Kashmir and the state be treated differently? They must. For, the NC and the PDP have caused more harm by pandering to communal and secessionist elements as part of the establishment. The separatists could be tackled without much difficulty. Right now, the need is to tackle those who masquerade as mainstream politicians but subvert the polity and divide the society. The first step could be the implementation of the Supreme Court verdict in letter and spirit - hang Guru till death and show the Kashmiri leadership its rightful place.
