Fresh challenge for NC led coalition | Providing sense of security to panches, sarpanches ….! | | early times eport Jammu, June 9 : The NC led coalition is faced with fresh challenge of providing security cover to thousands of elected panches and sarpanches who have been receiving threats from militant outfits as a result of which scores of them resigned for fear of life two days back. While this has come as fresh trouble for the ruling NC, other political parties too are feeling unnerved by the development which is being seen as attack on democratic institution. The moot question remains will the government be able to provide a security cover to a vast section of the elected representatives and would this allow their free movement in areas they are expected to work around…? While the attack on some panches and threat or warnings to all to desist from working in a manner government wants them to work has been condemned from various quarters, the political parties in opposition are rightly so critical of the government , in a way holding government responsible , and at the same time contending it is the duty of the government to provide them security as it was on the assurance of this government that candidates jumped into the fray and contested elections braving pressures and threats at the cost of their lives . Consequent upon elections, the government for over one year has not felt tired of making tall claims as its biggest achievement of holding Panchayat polls after over three decades in a smooth and successful way. These developments have come at a time when the claims of empowering panchayats has yet to come through, even as NC is trying to make some patch work and ad hoc arrangements the ways it suits them politically, no matter its own alliance partner Congress is clamouring loud again and again that it stands firm on empowerment the party envisages with thrust on incorporating 73rd and 74th amendments of constitution. Now even as the debate and rhetoric over empowerment remains as separate issue, both the alliance partners are faced with new challenge of providing sense of security and protection to the panches and sarpanches , which will become a tough task if more such incidents of attack or simple warnings come from any quarter that may push more representatives to resign. For if that happens, it will defeat the very purpose of holding massive exercise of Panchayat elections, and render the democratic institutions once gain defunct, something which the present government cannot afford in terms of losing huge funds from centre and face it crumble politically at the ground level. While government is now faced with new challenge of infusing sense of security by taking requisite steps in requisite places, the impact of these developments is also being felt negatively in areas where militant threats or warnings are not there. The panches and sarpanches in safe areas feel that it will divert the attention of the government from basic and fundamental task of empowerment in real sense, requirement on which government has been playing dilly dallying tactics, dampening the spirit of the democratic institutions.
