| Government invokes ESMA to deal with striking doctors | | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, July 4: The Jammu & Kashmir government today decided to invoke Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to deal with the strike called by the doctors in various health institutions of the state.
"The Government can't allow the hapless patients to suffer and in order to ensure that there is no disruption of healthcare services, it has been decided that ESMA would be invoked to deal with the strike called by the medicos," a senior officer in the Health and Medical Education Department said.
He said ensuring adequate healthcare services has become more imperative especially in view of the flood alert sounded by the government due to inclement weather conditions.
It would be in place to mention here that the resident doctors of the associated hospitals of Government Medical Colleges of Jammu and Srinagar have gone on a strike in support of their demands from Tuesday (July 3).
Due to the strike the work in all the associated hospitals of the two medical colleges of the state was affected for the second consecutive day today. Patients could be seen complaining about the absence of doctors and they were at loss as how to cope up with the emerging situation.
Reports said that some casualties have taken place in some of the hospitals due to the strike and the situation seemed to be out of control.
In order to act tough against the striking doctors, the Governor Narendra Nath Vohra led state administration today decided to invoke ESMA. The invocation of ESMA is expected to bring relief to the people and bring some sanity to the situation on the ground. |
