Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 4: The government of Jammu and Kashmir and juniors doctors of Government Medical Colleges in Jammu well as Srinagar, have come to loggerheads as Jammu's doctors went on strike on Wednesday and government invoked ESMA to deal with the strike called by the doctors.
Pertinently, the situation arose due to mass resignation submitted by resident doctors of the GMC Srinagar to protest against the autocratic attitude of the government to relieve scores of their colleagues from their posts.
Junior doctors, (Postgraduate and Registrars) of the GMC and its associated hospitals went on indefinite strike from Wednesday in support of the residents of GMC Srinagar and against the termination of the doctors. As per a written statement of Resident Doctors Association (RDA) GMC Jammu, a meeting took place between Principal and juniors doctors wherein the Principal assured that the matter was taken up with Principal Secretary, HME but due to termination of the residents of Srinagar, RDA GMC Jammu decided to go on indefinite strike.
The statement further states that doctors have special regard for the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra and flood alert for which a team of doctors- Rapid Action Team was formed which will provide health care in case of any emergency. A request was also made by striking doctors to solve the issue and address the genuine demands.
Principal, GMC Jammu, Dr Sunanda Raina said all PGs and Resident Doctors are under essential services. They submit an affidavit that they will obey the rules of the institution and if they create any indiscipline and go on any strike, they shall have to face action under rules.
The principal averred that there was no formal intimation by the junior doctors with regards to any strike, but said that alternate arrangements shall be ,made to ensure that the patient care did not suffer.
Contradictory to the statement of Principal, the junior doctors stated that they had informed in written that works of Wards and OPDs were suspended fromWednesday morning and only emergency would be attended to.
Credible sources, Health and Medical Education Department, told Early Times that in view of a flood alert and ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, the Government is contemplating stern action against the striking doctors.
