Jammu, June 5: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Centre celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June, 2025 with the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”. The event was attended by Engineers from various Departments, Organizations and Senior Engineers along with Members of the Committee of IEI, Jammu Centre.
On this occasion, Dr. Devansh Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation & Chief Executive Officer, Jammu Smart City Ltd. was the Chief Guest and Dr. Pratik Kumar, Assistant Professor, Environmental Engineering, IIT, Jammu was the Keynote Speakers. Er. Anil Verma, FIE Chairman, IEI, Jammu Centre presided over the function.
Er. Anil Verma, Chairman in his Welcome Address introduced the day’s theme to the audience. He regretted that mankind has become slave to plastic use and to lessen this slavery is an uphill task. He advocated for ban on single use plastic manufacturing as a first step to beat plastic pollution & requested the Govt. of UT of J&K to enforce Non-Biodegradable Garbage Control Act on the same lines as in Himachal Pradesh. It will go a long way in reducing the menace of plastic use by the people at large.
Dr. Devansh Yadav, IAS, Chief Guest informed that mandatory use of plastic in blacktopping of roads in Jammu will be a reality soon which will help in diminishing the harmful plastic presence in the environment. He also said that no doubt non-recyclable plastic is a challenge for the Govt. and all other stakeholders still efforts are being made to dispose it off scientifically in the times to come.
Dr. Pratik Kumar, Keynote Speaker spoke at length about the plastic pollution and appealed that four major stakeholders i.e. Govt., Academia, Industry and public should join hands and spread a word to curb the use of plastics of all kinds. He also sensitized the audience about the impact of micro plastics for humankind which though invisible to the naked eye, are creating havoc silently in harming humans by manifestation of many diseases.
During the seminar, Er. P. K. Nanda, FIE; Er. B. L. Rawal, FIE; Er. Joy Ganjoo, AM Technologist, Er. Akash Dusgotra, AMIE & Er. Anil Kumar, AMIE also presented their papers on the theme.
Er. Avneet Gupta, MIE, Honorary Secretary, IEI Jammu Local Centre presented the Vote of Thanks to the august gathering and media personnel for active participation.
