HIRANAGAR, June 5: In a significant stride to promote awareness regarding environment well being, the Department of Environmental Sciences, Eco-Club and NSS Unit of Govt. G.L.D.M. Degree College, Hiranagar celebrated World Environment Day, 2025. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of about 60 students. This year's theme "Putting an end to Plastic Pollution" served as a precursor to ongoing plastic menace prevalent worldwide. The event unfolded with a detailed lecture delivered by Prof. Neeru Sharma, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences. Highlighting the importance of the day, she stated that the UN General Assembly officially designated 5th June as World environment Day to protect the Environment, to raise awareness and to initiate sparking actions for Environment. She elaborated the hazards of plastic use, its impact on environment, need to control and stop plastic use. Emphasizing that 1/5th of World's Plastic garbage is produced in India and it contaminates the air, water, soil and damage wildlife, she pressed for using other sustainable means as alternative to plastics. Expressing concerns she added that the most dangerous form of the plastic is microplastic, which has eventually found its entry into the food chain and reached human body. She further impressed upon the three R's policy i.e., Reuse, Reduce and Recycle to beat the plastic pollution.
The programme was conducted under the able guidance and supervision of esteemed Principal of the college, Dr. Pragya Khanna. Underscoring the burning issue of plastic pollution, she apprised the students of various efforts arrayed at individual and community level to deal with the plastic menance. She added that World Environment Day raises awareness, mobilizes action and promotes environmental sustainability.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Rakesh Sharma gave an incite to the students about harmful impacts of plastic pollution. He said that world Environment Day brings together millions of people across the globe in a shared mission to safegurard and restore our planet. Those who marked their presence on the occasion included Dr. Anupma Arora, Prof. Shapia Shameem, Dr. Rajni Bala, Prof. Balwinder and Dr. Ritu Devi. The event concluded with a pledge taking ceremony in which students and staff pledged to avoid single use plastic, to follow 3 R's Principle of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and aware others on plastic pollution.
