Chandigarh, Nov 1: To commemorate the formation of the state, Chandigarh University celebrated Punjab Day with a two-day grand cultural extravaganza ‘Virasat-e-Punjab’ paying tribute to the rich cultural heritage and glorious history of Punjab.
Renowned Punjabi folk singer Paramjit Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Pammi Bai, inaugurated this cultural extravaganza, organised by Chandigarh University’s Department of Agriculture and Department of Department of Art and Cultural Affairs, as the chief guest. The other dignitaries who graced the inauguration ceremony included film director Jas Grewal, Arvinder Bhatti (brother of the late comedian and actor Jaspal Bhatti), Preet Kohli, Assistant Director, Punjab Youth Services Department and noted Sikh historians Dr Gurdarshan Singh, Ajmer Singh, and Sewak Singh.
The Heritage Fair organised as part of the celebration included a range of events showcasing the vibrant culture and history of Punjab including Kavi Sammelan and cultural competitions featuring folk songs, Bhangra, Giddha, Phulkari embroidery, Pakhis (hand fans), Parandas (hair accessories), clay toys and Chhikku (bamboo craft) making contests, showcasing essence of Punjab’s rich traditions. Live music concerts by the Lachkani Group, Rangla Sardar and Raman Lakahesar, bringing the true essence of Punjab to the stage through their powerful beats and soulful tunes.
Beats of dhol and the colors of Punjab took over Chandigarh University with visitors getting treated with exhibitions of rural Punjab. The fair featured stalls offering traditional Punjabi delicacies snacks like jalebi, pakoda, and samosa along with exhibitions of rare agricultural tools and cultural artifacts. The also fair featured Punjabi book exhibition, Handicrafts and Game Stalls, Horse Show and Camel Ride.
Renowned artists including Punjabi Sufi singers Hashmat Sultana and Kanwar Grewal also gave live performances during the grand celebration to remember the bravery, resilience, and cultural richness of the people who have contributed to making Punjab the land of prosperity and harmony.
Jujhar 'Tiger' Singh, first Indian and Sikh to claim an international Power Slap title with a stunning victory over Russia’s Anatolii "The Kraken" Galushka in Abu Dhabi, also joined the Punjab Day Celebration at the Chandigarh University campus.
In his address, Pammi Bai, who is renowned for his contributions to Punjabi music said, “Today’s young generation is gradually drifting away from its culture. I feel immensely happy to be a part of Virsa-e-Punjab. The way the university has displayed Punjab’s heritage is truly remarkable. By reviving and exhibiting artifacts that have faded with time, this initiative beautifully reconnects the youth with their cultural roots.”
