DPAP On Crossroads
11/21/2025 10:36:24 PM
Recently, former ministers Jugal Kishore Sharma from Reasi, Abdul Majid Wani from Doda and former MLC Subash Gupta from Kathua said goodbye to the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and rejoined the Congress.
They were welcomed in the party fold by the senior leaders, who termed it as “Ghar Wapsi.”
The trio had left the Congress Party three years ago when the former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had launched his own party. Other loyalists of Azad in the Congress camp had quit the grand old party and joined him with a hope that the party floated by the veteran leader would emerge as an alternative for other regional parties. However, the DPAP which was launched amidst huge fanfare and with a lot of hopes couldn’t live up to the expectations of either the people or the leaders who had joined it.
According to the media reports Azad himself is quietly nudging his loyalists to seek political rehabilitation elsewhere as he has almost withdrawn from active regional politics. Azad does not want the careers of his long-time supporters to wither within a party that is rapidly losing relevance.
During the 2024 assembly elections the former J&K Chief Minister did not campaign aggressively for his party leaders which led to disastrous results.
The DPAP was founded in September 2022, in the aftermath of Azad’s departure from the Congress. The party was projected as a regional alternative in the post-Article 370 landscape. However, the party couldn’t take off.
Azad had dissolved all DPAP committees — state, provincial, zonal, district, and block — in April 2025. The party had claimed that it was a move to restructure the organization but many believed that it was an attempt to revive the sinking party but the move didn’t work. The DPAP leaders since the party’s formation weren’t allowed to talk much due to the party’s agenda not falling into place.
As the DPAP collapsed in Jammu and Kashmir, Azad remained active on the national and international stage. He participated in India’s all-party delegations to Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Algeria and made the international community aware about the significance of “Operation Sindoor.”
Azad’s prolonged absence from regional politics and other DPAP leaders not taking the lead has led to the party getting crumbled under its own weight. It appears that Azad’s party is all set to become history and vanish from the political arena of Jammu and Kashmir.
