Early Times Report
CHANDIGARH, Dec 18: As part of its sustained commitment to community outreach and social responsibility, Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women extended academic support to Government Senior Secondary School, Khuda Ali Sher, by contributing to the inaugural day of the school's seven-day and night NSS Camp.
Dr. Harjot Kaur Mann, Nutrition Expert and Head, Department of Home Science delivered an insightful lecture titled 'Nutrition among Adolescents: Decoding Healthy Foundations'. The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 50 students of Class XII and aimed to create awareness about healthy eating habits and their pivotal role in physical growth, academic performance, and long-term well-being. During the interactive lecture, students were introduced to the basic components of a balanced diet-carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, water, and dietary fibre, along with their specific functions in the body.
Emphasis was laid on the importance of locally available, affordable, and seasonal foods in meeting daily nutritional requirements. Dr. Mann also highlighted common nutritional challenges faced by adolescents, including anemia, undernutrition, obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies, underscoring the significance of iron-rich foods, calcium for bone health, and adequate protein intake. The session further addressed lifestyle-related concerns such as the impact of physical activity, sleep, hydration, and stress on overall health. Students were cautioned against unhealthy practices like skipping meals, excessive consumption of junk food and sugary beverages, and irregular eating patterns. Practical suggestions such as eating breakfast regularly, opting for home-cooked meals, reading food labels, limiting screen time, and adopting indigenous cooking methods were shared to promote an active and mindful lifestyle. In the true spirit of the NSS motto, students actively participated in preparing and serving food, and responsibly managing post-meal duties, thereby fostering values of national service, cooperation, and brotherhood.
Appreciating the initiative, Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma remarked that such outreach activities reflect the institution's dedication to holistic education and community engagement. She added that empowering young minds with scientific and practical knowledge of nutrition is a meaningful step towards building a healthier society.
