Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 28: The Department of Music at Padma Shri Padma Sachdev (PSPS) Government College for Women, Gandhinagar, celebrated the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami today with a vibrant cultural program. The event served as a soulful tribute to Goddess Saraswati, marking the onset of spring and honoring the profound heritage of Indian Classical Music.
The festivities commenced with the traditional Lamp Lighting ceremony, led by the Chief Guest, Dr. Kulvinder Kour, Worthy Principal of the college. The ceremony symbolized the transition from ignorance to enlightenment and the pursuit of wisdom. In welcome address,
Prof. Samosh, Head of the Department of Music, formally greeted the guests and enlightened the audience on the spiritual, cultural and educational significance of Basant Panchami in the Indian tradition.
The students, under the expert mentorship of the music faculty, showcased a series of high-caliber performances that captivated the audience: Saraswati Vandana presented by Suhani, Shilpi, Priya, & Aaushi (Sem 7th) as a melodic invocation to the Goddess of Wisdom. Pallavi & Deepika of Sem 6th rendered a Sitar Recital presented Razakhani Gat in Raag Vrindavani Sarang. Janvi Malhotra (Sem 4th) rendered a masterful and technical rendition in Raag Bhairav. A soulful performance that resonated with spiritual fervor presented through Bhajan by Gunjan Chowdhary of Sem 6th. The performances were bolstered by professional accompaniment, with Prof. Rahul on the Harmonium and Bimla on the Tabla.
The program's success was a testament to the rigorous training provided by the faculty mentors, including Dr. Priyanka, Prof. Rahul, Prof. Anisa Karim, and Prof. Jeevan Jyoti. The event was graced by several distinguished faculty members, notably Dr. Renu Anand (HOD Mathematics) and Dr. Bajinder (HOD Sanskrit), who joined the staff and students in celebrating this cultural milestone. Chief Guest Dr. Kulvinder Kour lauded the Music Department for maintaining exceptional artistic standards.
In her address, she emphasized how Basant Panchami represents the rebirth of both nature and the human intellect. She further inspired the students by sharing valuable tips on the importance of Riyaz (consistent practice) and the discipline required to master the performing arts. The event was elegantly anchored by Ms. Sneha (Sem 5th). The proceedings concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by Prof. Samosh, who expressed deep gratitude to the college administration, faculty, and students for making the commemoration a resounding.
