Don’t Get Carried Away
7/26/2026 9:56:27 PM
Recently Jammu and Kashmir Police cautioned people against falling prey to fraudulent “Watch & Earn” and “Easy Money” mobile applications, warning that cyber criminals are using such apps to steal personal and financial information and carry out fraudulent transactions.
Smartphones and digital payment platforms have become an integral part of everyday life, cybercriminals are constantly devising new methods to exploit people’s trust, curiosity, and desire for quick financial gains.
The promise offered by these applications appears simple and attractive. Users are told that they can earn money by watching videos, liking posts, completing simple online tasks, or investing a small amount for unusually high returns. Initially, some victims may even receive small payments, creating an illusion of legitimacy and encouraging them to invest larger sums or invite friends and relatives. Once substantial amounts are deposited, the applications either stop functioning or the fraudsters disappear, leaving victims with financial losses and compromised personal information.
The warning from the police highlights a growing challenge that extends far beyond financial theft. These fraudulent applications often demand unnecessary permissions to access contacts, photographs, messages, banking details, and other sensitive information stored on mobile phones. Such data can later be misused for identity theft, blackmail, unauthorized financial transactions, or further cybercrimes. In many cases, victims suffer long after the initial fraud has taken place.
The increasing popularity of digital payments, online banking, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services, and mobile wallets has undoubtedly transformed India’s financial landscape. However, this digital revolution must be accompanied by greater awareness about cyber hygiene. Technology alone cannot protect citizens if users themselves ignore basic precautions. The old saying that “if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is” remains as relevant in the digital age as it has ever been.
Public awareness is therefore the strongest weapon against such scams. Educational institutions, banks, government departments, social organisations, and the media all have a shared responsibility to educate citizens about emerging cyber threats.
