Extra luggage can now be booked online along with ticket

Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 27: To improve facilities for rail passengers and reduce crowding at stations, the Railway Board has taken an important decision. From 31 July 2026, passengers will be able to book their extra luggage online along with their ticket through the IRCTC website or mobile app. This will allow passengers to book both their ticket and luggage from the comfort of their homes, without having to stand in long queues at the parcel counter.
The free luggage allowance for each class will remain unchanged. For First AC it is 70 kg, for Second AC 50 kg, for Sleeper 40 kg, and for Second Class 35 kg. If a passenger has luggage more than this limit, it can now be booked online and carried along. Under the new facility, passengers can book up to 80 kg extra in First AC, 50 kg in Second AC, 40 kg in Sleeper, and 35 kg in Second Class. However, in Third AC and Chair Car, carrying extra luggage inside the coach will not be permitted. If luggage exceeds 40 kg in these classes, it will have to be booked in the luggage van.
For passenger safety and to avoid congestion in coach aisles, a size limit has also been fixed. In First AC, Second AC and General coaches, the luggage size should not exceed 100 x 60 x 25 cm. In Third AC, the maximum size allowed will be 55 x 45 x 22.5 cm. Luggage larger than the prescribed size will not be allowed inside the coach, even if it is within the weight limit.
Under this decision, a charge of 1.5 times the normal luggage rate will be levied for online booking. At the same time, strict checking will be conducted. If any passenger is found carrying luggage above the free limit without booking during travel, a penalty of up to 6 times the normal luggage rate will be charged. This online facility will remain available till the preparation of the train chart.
Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu said, "This new system will make booking easier, save time, and make travel more comfortable. The railway administration appeals to passengers to take advantage of this digital service and book their luggage before travel."
