Migrants express anguish over non-fulfillment of assurances

Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 31: Members of various committees of Jagti Migrant Camp on Friday expressed strong anguish over the non-fulfillment of assurances given by the authorities, particularly regarding restoration of regular water supply and pending repair works in the camp.
In a hurriedly convened joint meeting, representatives of all existing organizations in Jagti said the authorities had assured that regular water supply to the camp would be resumed by *30.07.2026*, but the commitment remains unimplemented.
The meeting expressed grave concern over the delay in streamlining roof repairs of camp buildings and renovation of interiors of deteriorated flats.
"Maximum flats are in a dilapidated condition. Leaking roofs, damp walls and broken interiors have increased the usual sufferings of residents, especially during monsoon," a committee member
The members also cautioned Jagti residents against "outsiders hijacking" their issues without any mandate.
"We are about 20,000 souls living in Jagti. We have our own committees and our own voice to fight for our grievances. Any representation made outside the camp on behalf of Jagti residents holds no value. Such uninvited meetings with authorities are only aimed at diluting our peaceful protest," the joint statement said.
The committees urged all concerned authorities not to entertain any representation from outside the camp in the name of Jagti migrants.
After threadbare discussions, the meeting resolved that if all pending grievances - including water supply, roof repairs and flat renovation - are not redressed on a war-footing within a week, the residents will be constrained to launch a peaceful protest.
"The authorities will be solely responsible for any such protest," the members warned.
Jagti Township, housing over 4,224 flats, has been facing a dual crisis of irregular drinking water supply and leaking roofs since last year, with residents alleging that repeated assurances have yielded no results on the ground.
