Congress raises concern over suspension of surgeries at GMC Udhampur, demands cccountability

Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, July 31: The Congress Party on Friday expressed serious concern over the reported suspension of surgeries at the Associated Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC), Udhampur, alleging that rainwater leakage in the operation theatres has exposed glaring deficiencies in the hospital's infrastructure. District Congress Committee (DCC) President Sumeet Magotra, along with party workers, visited the hospital to take stock of the situation after receiving complaints from patients. During the visit, he interacted with patients and attendants, many of whom claimed that surgical procedures had been postponed for nearly two weeks as two of the hospital's three operation theatres had become unusable due to roof leakages.
Speaking to reporters after the visit, Magotra said the disruption of essential healthcare services had put patients under tremendous hardship and reflected poorly on the maintenance of a premier government healthcare institution.
He said the Medical Superintendent informed him that the hospital administration had earlier approached the Public Works Department (PWD) for waterproofing of the roof after similar leakages during last year's monsoon. Although the work was reportedly completed, fresh leakages this season have once again affected hospital operations. Describing the situation as unacceptable, Magotra questioned the quality of the waterproofing work and sought an independent inquiry into the execution of the project. He urged the District Administration to identify those responsible and take appropriate action against any official, engineer or contractor found guilty of negligence.
The Congress leader also called for immediate restoration of the affected operation theatres to ensure that all pending surgeries are carried out without further delay. Criticising the functioning of public representatives, Magotra said elected leaders should regularly inspect government hospitals and interact directly with patients to understand the problems being faced on the ground instead of depending only on official review meetings.
