Early Times Report
KARGIL, Oct 24: The Department of Geography, Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil, organised an educational field study tour to Parkachik Village and Parkachik Glacier to provide students with practical exposure to glacial landforms, geomorphological processes and human-environment interactions in the high-altitude Himalayan region of Ladakh.
The tour was conducted under the guidance of Head of the Department, Mr. Sayed Mustafa Kamal, and faculty member Mr. Tashi Gyatso.
During the visit, students closely examined various glacial landforms associated with Parkachik Glacier and gained first-hand insights into the geomorphological features shaped by glacial processes. The field study provided an opportunity to relate classroom learning to real-world observations and deepen their understanding of the physical geography of the Himalayan region.
The students also interacted with local residents of Parkachik Village to learn about their traditional lifestyles, livelihoods, settlement patterns and adaptation strategies in the challenging mountainous environment. These interactions helped them understand the close relationship between geographical conditions and the socio-economic life of local communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Head of the Department, Mr. Sayed Mustafa Kamal, emphasised the importance of experiential learning in geography. He stated that field visits bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical observation, enabling students to develop a better understanding of natural processes and the human-environment relationship.
Faculty member Mr. Tashi Gyatso also highlighted the educational significance of the tour, noting that direct exposure to glacial features and interaction with local communities enhance students' observational, analytical and field research skills.
The Department of Geography, GDC Kargil, continues to promote field-based learning as an integral part of academic development, providing students with meaningful opportunities to explore and understand the physical and human geography of Ladakh.
Government Degree College Kargil remains committed to academic excellence and the holistic development of students through practical learning, research and educational activities.
