Eyeing Cong vote bank, NC divided over joining Rahul’s Yatra
12/28/2022 11:23:54 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 28: Although Congress leadership claimed that Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Omar, Mehbooba Mufti, and others have given their consent to join the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the National Conference leadership of reportedly divided over actively joining Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra.
Highly placed sources said that a group within the National Conference is against actively participating in the Bharat Jodo Yatra when the Yatra enters Jammu and Kashmir through Lakhanpur.
“Some senior leaders of the National Conference argued that the party is in a position to encash anti-BJP sentiments both in Jammu and Kashmir provinces respectively so joining Bharat Jodo Yatra at this juncture would provide an opportunity to the Congress to reactive”, a source said.
Sources said that a faction within the National Conference suggested that instead of joining Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra the party leadership would focus on the Jammu region to fill the vacuum created due to the inactiveness of the Congress.
“Congress is almost defunct in both Jammu and Kashmir regions. The National Conference has already retrieved its ground in Kashmir Valley and now the party is focusing on Jammu province”, a source said and added that joining Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra would be proved counter-productive for the party to strengthen its base in Jammu province where Congress is a force.
Sources said some senior party leaders argued that it is high time to make inroads into the Congress vote bank so that the party would emerge as the single largest party in the assembly elections in J&K.
Sources further said that apart from keeping Congress in good humour top leadership of the National Conference is also trying to remain in the non-Congress and non-BJP opposition parties at the national level.
