Katra Police misbehaving with family of victim unfortunate: R S Pathania
Teenage girl’s mysterious death
5/6/2023 11:17:21 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, May 6: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and the party spokesman R S Pathania on Saturday expressed dismay over Police misbehaving with Basant Lal, father of a teenage girl, who was found hanging in a hotel in Katra last month.
Talking to Early Times Pathania, who is the former BJP legislator from Ramnagar, said, “It’s the right of the victim’s family to know the cause of death. It’s unfortunate that Katra Police has misbehaved with the family members of the deceased girl.”
Pathania, who is also a lawyer, said, “Police should explain their investigations to the family members of the victim. Justice should be done and it should appear to have been done.”
Pathania said, “I have met the victim’s family and have told them to come with me to Katra so that we can sit with Police officers and see how they have carried out the investigations. It’s the right of the family members to put forth their apprehensions and doubts and Police have to look into it.”
The BJP leader said, “If the family members of the victim want to change the Investigating Officer or handover the case to some other Station House Officer it can be done.”
He said, “R S Pathania stands with the family members of the victim and would fight to seek justice for them. As a former legislator of Ramnagar it’s my duty to raise the voice of the people of my area.”
It’s in place to mention here that father of the victim Basant Lal has urged the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to hand over his daughter’s case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Lal, who is a resident of a remote village of Ramnagar area of Udhampur, had said, “Police haven’t even registered a FIR in the case. Nor have they collected her postmortem report. We don’t even know her cause of death. She died on April 9, 2023 and till date I don’t know what led to my daughter’s death.”
He said, “Police are trying to pass on the murder of my daughter as a suicide and I have lost hope to get justice. My hand folded appeal to LG Sinha is to handover my daughter’s case to CBI and order an enquiry to know why Police haven’t collected the postmortem report till date.”
Lal had alleged that Police are trying to hush up the murder case of his daughter as they haven’t even collected the relevant evidence in the case. “I hope my voice will reach LG Sinha. He would take the cognizance and handover the case to CBI,” Lal said.
Basant Lal on Thursday had told reporters that he has lost all hope to get justice due to the alleged “casual approach” of the senior police officers in this sensitive case.
“No one is ready to listen to me. For the last week, I have been approaching one officer after another but to no avail, as cops are not ready to even listen to my grievance”, Lal had said.
“It is all due to my economic condition that police officers are taking the mysterious murder of my daughter casually,” Lal had said.
“Owner of the hotel where my daughter was serving is an influential person so cops are trying to hushup the murder of my teenage daughter”, he had alleged and refuted the police’s story that his daughter had committed a suicide.
“Due to their behaviour and inhuman attitude, I have lost faith in Katra Police”, he had said and aired apprehension that by abusing his position the hotel owner would change the postmortem report with the “help of police officers.”
Narrating the unfortunate episode, he recalled that on April 8 evening, he spoke to his 18-year old daughter and she was happy and satisfied with her job. “On April 9, I received a call on my phone from Police Station Katra. I was informed that my daughter is critical and asked to rush to Katra immediately”, he said and regretted that when he reached Katra he was informed that his daughter has committed suicide. “Police kept me in the dark”, he pointed out and added that cops were not even ready to record the statement of the colleagues of his deceased daughter.
As per a report a teenage female staffer of a prominent hotel in Katra town was found hanging under mysterious circumstances at the staff quarter of the hotel last month.
The 18-year old girl was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the staff quarter of the hotel.
According to the Police, the girl was working as a housekeeping employee in the hotel for the last few months. A case was registered in this regard and investigations were taken up.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Katra had said that a case has already been registered and investigation is going on. “We are waiting for the postmortem report for further investigation”, the SP had said.
