Mysterious death of senior engineer: J&K Police handover probe to Crime Branch
9/2/2023 10:53:11 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 2: Jammu & Kashmir police has handed over the investigation of the mysterious death of a senior Road and Building Engineer in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district to the Crime branch.
Body of missing Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), Gurmeet Singh was found from a barrage in Lower Jhelum Hydel Project (LJHP) in Gantamulla of Baramulla district on August 29, four days after he went missing.
Soon after the body was found, protests had erupted in Baramulla and the family and various Sikh and civil society groups had demanded a probe into the matter by the Central Bureau of Investigation or Crime branch. Some of the protesters alleged that it was a murder.
Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh on Saturday said there was a demand for the case to be transferred to the Crime branch.
He said J&K police without wasting time took cognizance of the matter after the engineer was reported missing.
“Police took cognizance very very quickly without wasting time. We also took the community into confidence.
We have been with them all through and our sympathies are with them. That incident took place and an FIR was registered. Demand was there. That case has been transferred to the Crime branch now,” Singh told reporters in Sopore sub district on the sidelines of a function.
About the recovery of a body of a elderly Sikh from an orchard in Tral area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Friday evening, DGP said it appears to be a bit dicey.
“I don’t know what could be the possible reasons for the death, but cognizance has been taken by police. We are proceeding with our investigation and I am sure we will be able to find the factual position as to what happened, what could be the possible cause of death,” Singh said.
He said there is no reason to generalize this kind of incident.
“It can happen anywhere, anytime” he added.
