BJP ready to back Baig as independent candidate

Jammu, Feb 22: It is official now, BJP on Thursday confirmed that the party was ready to support Muzaffar Hussain Baig in case he contests the coming Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate from north Kashmir’s Baramulla Parliamentary constituency.
“As of now, we can not say that Muzaffar Hussain Baig will be a proxy candidate for BJP in Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency but there is a buzz in the political circle in this regard”, Vibodh Gupta, general secretary of the J&K BJP.
He, however, said in case Muzaffar Hussain Baig would contest the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency as an Independent candidate, the BJP would definitely support him to ensure his victory.
Vibodh Gupta further said that Baig is a tall political personality of Jammu and Kashmir and he would surely win elections if he decides to contest the same.
Gupta further said that the presence of Muzaffar Hussain Baig in the Prime Minister’s rally at Moulana Azad Stadium was an attraction.
Important to mention here that the Early Times in its February 22 edition reported that there are rumours in the political circle that the former Deputy Chief Minister is going to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate from north Kashmir’s Baramulla Parliamentary constituency.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Muzaffar Hussain Baig had won this Parliamentary seat as a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party.
While Baig will join the fray as an Independent candidate, the BJP will support his candidature to ensure the former Deputy Chief Minister will get the maximum votes of the Pahari-speaking people.
After granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Pahari-speaking people, the BJP is hopeful that this community will vote in support of Muzaffar Hussain Baig, who is the tallest leader among all Paharis.
Baramulla Parliamentary constituency of north Kashmir is dominated by a Pahari-speaking population so the BJP is optimistic about effectively competing with the National Conference or other regional groups.
