JALANDHAR, Apr 6: A collaborative architectural studio program - 'Architectural Linguistics of Education 'ALECS-2024' was recently held between the School of Architecture & Design (LSAD) at Lovely Professional University (LPU) and the University of Alcalá (UAH), Madrid, Spain. It researched into sharpening the understanding of participants as to how educational buildings are created and interpreted in Chandigarh, Punjab and Spain. Here, 36 Spanish students with 7 faculty members collaborated with the 35 students and 8 professors of LSAD.
In a ground-breaking initiative the group of two universities embarked on a transformative journey to research into architectural connections between Spain and the Punjab, specifically Chandigarh. It navigated the complexities of real-world projects and refine creative processes within the domain of architecture.
The program emphasized that the significance of collaboration within the pedagogy of architecture is vital, as it cultivates a rich environment. Here students not only learn technical skills but also hone attributes including teamwork, effective communication, for further engaging in constructive debates.
The University of Alcalá, founded in 1499, stands as a beacon of academic excellence, recognized globally for its architectural beauty and richness. Designated as a 'World Heritage Site' by UNESCO, it serves as a model to be emulated across Europe and America. LSAD under the leadership of Dr. Ar. Atul Kumar Singla endeavours to establish a new benchmark in architectural pedagogy. The program ALECS is a testimony to the same.
Through intensive observation and night studio sessions, students immersed themselves in architectural principles, fostering a deeper understanding of design intricacies. The journey commenced with an immersive experience for the delegates from Alcala University, including a tour of educational infrastructure designed by architectural luminaries such as Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Additionally, visits to the iconic Panjab University in Chandigarh provided invaluable insights into architectural design and interpretation.
The inaugural session was graced virtually by His Excellency Jose Maria Ridao Dominguez, the Ambassador of Spain to India, where he underscored the significance of international collaboration in architectural education. He feels that "Integrating collaboration into architectural pedagogy empowers future architects to tackle complex challenges." H.E. Mr. Dinesh K Patnaik, the Indian Ambassador in Spain, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of such global partnerships.
Founder Chancellor of LPU and Member of Parliament, Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal emphasized the importance of collaboration within architectural pedagogy. Structuring design studios around collaborative principles prepares students to tackle real-world projects, understand diverse perspectives, and refine their creative processes.
The highlight of the event was an exhibition showcasing the collaborative works of Spanish and Indian students followed by a cultural showcase by both universities. The exhibition was inaugurated by LPU's Pro Chancellor Mrs. Rashmi Mittal, Ar. Kapil Setia, Chief Architect- Chandigarh Administration and Dr. Navdeep Asija, Director, Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre (PRSTRC). Visiting Spanish students wondered at the architectural prowess of LPU's campus, renowned for its 'Brutalist' architecture and bold urban statement. Dr. Ar Atul Singla, Chief Architect & Head of LSAD, expressed delight at LPU serving as an inspiring example for the visiting participants.
The preliminary session of the workshop had set the tone for an enriching academic journey, marked by insightful discussions amongst faculties. As part of the events held in India, the delegates from Alcala University, led by Enrique Castano Parea (Director, Department of Architecture, UAH) accompanied by Dr. Rosa Cervera, Flevio Cellis D'Amico and Ernesto Enrique Echeverria Valiente visited India to engage in further collaborative activities
Faculty members at LSAD including Ar. Rajendra Kumar, Prof. Tara Singla, Prof Dr Nagendra Narayan, Ar. Mohammed Yasar Arafath, Ar. Chetan Sachdeva, Ar. Priyadarshni Chathurvedi, Ar. Mustafizur Rehman, Ar. Abhinav Tripathi, Ar. Sharen Handa mentored and coordinated the program. The session of ALECS2024 culminated with a colourful Indian festival-Holi celebration arranged by the Division of Student Welfare, LPU. With a visit to the Golden Temple, Amritsar and plans in place for the second edition of ALECS2024, the delegation from Spain departed.
