If I’m a tourist what forces you to beg for support: Omar asks Sajad
Says PDP benefiting BJP in J&K

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 21: A day after J&K Peoples Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone sought support of Altaf Bukhari led Apni Party in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in north Kashmir’s Baramulla segment, the former chief minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah on Sunday hit out at the former, saying “Till yesterday I was a tourist, but today they are seeking support of others to defeat me”.
“Till yesterday I was being dubbed as a tourist, but today they beg before Apni Party, seeking help to defeat me in North Kashmir. If they have courage to fight and if I’m not in a position to win elections there, then why they beg for support from Altaf Bukhari. This vindicates that land has started slipping under their feet,” Omar Abdullah told reporters in Anantnag.
He said, “It has BJP’s strategy to put A, B and C teams in the field. BJP is doing frequent meetings in Srinagar. Recently Tarun Chugh visited here and held closed door meetings in which PC Chairman Sajad Gani Lone was a part. The Union Home Minister is targeting INDIA bloc and NC only. He didn’t speak a single word against these A, B and C teams”.
The former chief minister said that BJP and its proxies are trying to defeat us and are trying to change election results, but we are hopeful that people will cast their votes in favor of INDIA bloc and NC candidates and make our contest on all three seats in Kashmir valley a grand success.
On seat sharing tussle with PDP, the NC leader said “We are in the INDIA bloc not because of greed for seats, and PAGD was not formed for the same reason. Seats are being divided through a set formula agreed upon by every constituent. But unfortunately it couldn’t materialize at regional level”.

Meanwhile, Omar accused Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP of benefiting the BJP by contesting elections against the INDIA bloc in Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite being regional rivals, the PDP and the NC had joined the opposition alliance but failed to arrive at a seat sharing agreement.
“It is they (PDP) who were selfish. They had tied up with the INDIA bloc with the only aim of getting this (Anantnag-Rajouri) seat.
“The INDIA alliance is fighting the BJP, and the INDIA alliance is here on this stage. Those who are not on this stage are trying to benefit the BJP. This is a fact,” Abdullah said at an election rally at Bijbehara in Anantnag district, the native place of Mehbooba Mufti.
He said the objective of forming the alliance was to counter the communal forces “especially the BJP”.
“In Jammu and Kashmir also, we joined the INDIA bloc with the same aim. The aim was not to look for seats or our own benefits. We were looking at the interests of Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country.
“Unfortunately, especially in this Lok Sabha constituency, our contest is with another member of the INDIA bloc. Now we are being accused of being selfish. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti says this in her speech every day that NC is acting selfishly. For a minute, let’s assume that we are selfish. Is Congress also selfish? Look at the signs.
“If there is an NC sign, there is the Congress’ as well. We have both NC and Congress leaders campaigning together. M Y Tarigami has also extended support to Mian Altaf Ahmad (NC candidate). Is Tarigami also selfish?” he asked.
Abdullah said if the National Conference was selfish, it would have put up a candidate in Kargil where it has the majority in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC).
