Early Times Report

Poonch, Oct 12: Contrary to the tall claims of the state government of having streamlined the healthcare delivery system in every nook and corner of the state, the government run hospital in Poonch district presents a very gloomy picture of medicare facilities with acute shortage of medical staff, including doctors- giving an impression that all is not well with the District Hospital (DH) Poonch.
Sources said, District Hospital, Poonch is working with short of sanctioned strength of doctors and other allied staff as many posts are lying vacant in the health institution.
"The District Hospital (DH) Poonch was set up to provide quality medicare to people of the area, they said adding, "but it is quite dismaying to note that this state-of-the-art hospital has failed to live to the expectations of people."
"This is due to a number of reasons including shortage of doctors and para medical staff, sources said and added that the patients who can be treated at this hospital are often referred to either District Hospital Rajouri or to Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu. Sources lamented that the doctors usually show inability to treat them at Poonch Hospital on the pretext that concerned doctor is not available in the hospital. "Mostly Medical Assistants and lower staff are seen attending to the patients, locals alleged, and further accused that costly medical equipments are becoming junk in the stores of the hospital as there is no expert to handle the equipments. Locals also alleged that ironically during harsh winter season the patients have to rush to either Rajouri or Jammu for treatment even for minor health ailments. They said, "Even emergency services in the hospital lacks proper functioning for X-ray, Dental fillings and other minor tests, extra charges are charged from the patients while patients have to purchase medicines from the market.
Irked over lack of facilities at DH Poonch, the locals questioned the concerned official and ministry if this is the development in medical sector in this area for which our leaders often claim that development of far flung areas -which is the priority of administration. They also suggested the administration to look into the ground realities and provide necessary staff viz. doctors and supporting technical experts so as this hospital could function in a better way and live upto the expectation of poor patients of this area.
