Petty politicking
2/16/2018 8:35:09 PM
Omkar Dattatray

Politics is a dirty game but Indian politics is dirtier and murkier. It was fully manifested in the recently held assembly elections to Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. The Indian brand of electoral politics is dirtier as was in full swing in the campaigns of the two states. Everything is fair in politics, love and war and there are no permanent foes and friends in politics. All political parties without exception have stopped too low to catch votes. Clean politics is a thing of yester years and it has no takers in the present murkier politics. The Political hygiene is a thing of past. Our electoral democracy has been reduced to leveling of charges and counter charges just to catch votes. Gujarat and Himachal elections have drifted too low. PM Narender Modi has even dragged Pakistan into election discourse only to emotionalize the already surcharged environment to garner votes. Mani Shanker Ayier's Neech remark for PM has backfired and acted as a short in arm for BJP. PM Narinder Modi being the master strategist has exploited the election campaign to the hilt to gain some seats in election. The neech politics has boomeranged and had given a handle to BJP to beat congress party. Yes there was no level playing field between PM Modi and congress President Rahul Gandhi but still congress has managed to get 80 seats in the assembly elections. This is no mean achievement for the congress by any standard given the fact that central ministers, some state Chief Ministers besides BJP president and the PM has campaigned for Gujarat elections. One wonders where is the claim of crossing 150 mark in Gujarat assembly. This claim has been punctured by the social engineering done by Rahul Gandhi. The BJP has got a simple majority in Gujarat and its tally has shrunk to two digit figure of 99. Thus the tall claims of BJP have proved hallow. Rahul Gandhi with the help of Hardik Patil, Alpesh Thakur and Gignesh Mewani had dented the chances of BJP to vast extent as the trio had not allowed BJP to gain two-third majority in the assembly. In Himachal Pradesh BJP has got two-third majority as anti incumbency factor has played a great role there. Congress has not campaigned in an effective manner in Himachal Pradesh and had focused all its attention on Gujarat Polls. Both the Congress and the BJP have resorted to Mandir politics to the hilt to score electoral dividends. Both the parties levelled charges of doing caste politics to each other. The neech remark has hit the Gujarati pride and it has scored some seats for BJP. Likewise BJP's attack on Rahul Gandhi over his religion has also played its part in Gujarat elections. Though there is no match between Modi and Rahul but still Rahul Gandhi is a challenge to the BJP in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and other states going to elections in 2018. All this boils down to the fact that electoral democracy in India has been reduced to petty Politicking.
