Neither separatists nor militants wish Kashmir to taste peace
6/14/2018 10:17:01 PM
Has unilateral ceasefire promoted peace in Kashmir? This is a million dollar question and defies direct reply. Judged by the killing 29 people, including over 20 militants, besides attacks on police and security forces, in which six policemen were killed and 10 others injured, peace, during the ceasefire, remained a distant dream. And if DGP, S.P. Vaid, is to be believed he holds militants responsible for incidents of violence even during the last 28 days of ceasefire. The vice-president of National Conference, Omar Abdullah, has stated that if after the lifting of ceasefire militants would be responsible if incidents of violence and encounters peaked. He is right once unilateral ceasefire was not extended security forces may be at liberty to carry out search operations which may result in encounters between militants and security forces. And Omar is correct in holding militants responsible if the level of violence and killings increases
One report from the Army authorities and police is encouraging in the sense the report nullifies the claim that militant groups are engaged in fresh recruitment. And the way the security forces and the police retaliated whenever militants attacked them has generated fear among those youth wishing to join militant groups and this scare of possible death has been responsible for down the hill journey for recruitment. And Pakistan has already is keen to make up for the depleted number of militants in the Kashmir valley by asking its troops to push groups of militants, all non-Kashmiris, into the valley to escalate the level of violence. The focus from across the LoC is on speeding the level of infiltration. But the alert Indian troops have foiled scores ingress bids by killing more than 10 infiltrators during the last 28 days of ceasefire.
It is an established fact that neither the separatists nor the militants want a situation which can be termed as peace in Kashmir. Once peace is restored to Kashmir the issue of Kashmir is settled and Pakistan may not be able to rake the issue. And once Pakistan fails to rake the Kashmir issue it may make separatists irrelevant and toothless. That could be possible for the way Hurriyat leaders are willing to have a dialogue with New Delhi provided India declared that Kashmir is a disputed territory. Once separatists achieve this Pakistan could rake up the issue of settling the case about disputed territory. And the day is not far off when the separatists demand bilateral talks to be converted into triangular parleys thereby meaning Pakistan's involvement in talks.
