SRINAGAR, June 14: In a brazen attack on journalism in Kashmir unidentified gunmen shot dead veteran journalist Syed Shujaat Bukhari outside his office in the Press Enclave here today in the evening. Shujaat was the Editor in Chief of English daily Rising Kashmir.
One of the Personal Security Officers of Shujaat has also been killed in the incident while as the condition of yet another PSO is stated to be critical. The killing of Shujaat sent shock waves among the people especially the journalist fraternity who referred to killing as an act of cowardice.
Reports said that Shujaat along with the two PSOs sustained grievous injuries in the incident and were shifted to hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared Shujaat and one of his PSOs as brought dead. The condition of second PSO is said to be extremely critical at the hospital. Reports said that at about 7:00 PM gunmen said to be four in number appeared at the Press Enclave and fired upon the vehicle of Shujaat who was present in the vehicle along with the PSOs. One of the PSOs was driving the vehicle while as the second one was sitting beside him. The gunmen showered a volley of bullets on the trio leading to pandemonium in the area.
Reports suggested that Shujaat died on spot with this lifeless boy remaining in the vehicle for some time.
The gunmen decamped with a rifle of one of the PSOs after the incident. Although a team of nearby Kothi Bagh police station rushed to the spot, but by that time the gunmen had run away. "The vehicle in which Shujaat and his PSOs were sitting was attacked by gunmen from three sides. The gunmen opened the barrel of their respective guns while pumping bullets on the trio. Shujaat received many rounds of bullet and it seemed that some security camp has been attacked by the militants," said an eye-witness.
Yet another eyewitness told Early Times that firing was so intense that people virtually remained crawled on the ground for some time. As soon as firing stopped people rushed to the spot and found Shujaat along with his PSOs lying injured in the vehicle. The staffers of Rising Kashmir and other media house also rushed to the spot in order to shift the injured to the hospital. Shujaat had an illustrious career in journalism and worked for reputed organizations like The Kashmir Times and The Hindu. He also contributed for many international media houses while writing columns and articles for them. His death has been widely condoled by the people especially by people belonging to the fourth estate. Chief Minister, Mehbooa Mufti strongly condemned the killing of Shujaat. In a condolence message, the Chief Minister described the killing of Shujaat as highly barbaric, deplorable and condemnable. The Chief Minister visited the Hospital and paid her respects to the departed soul. She also conveyed her heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family particularly his parents, wife and two kids.m Governor N.N. Vohra has also conveyed shock and grief on the gruesome killing of Shujaat. Recalling Bukhari's standing as a veteran journalist Governor described his murder as a big loss to the media fraternity. Leader of opposition Omar Abdullah also condemned the killing of Shujaat. Separatist leaders Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mohammad Yasin Malik have also expressed shock over the killing of Shujaat.
