Over 37 green trees axed in red zone area | | | Ashwani Sharma Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, Dec 5: Throwing all the norms to winds, over 37 green trees were axed illegally last night in the already declared red zone area in industrial estate Battal Ballian near here. It is pertinent to mention here that the red zone area is that high risk area where pollution levels are already beyond normal limits. Sources informed that lease holder of a allotted plot at the industrial estate Battal Ballian in Udhampur got the trees axed to expand his business and that too under the nose of concerned authorities. Manik Chowdhary, an environmentalist informed that it is a suicidal step to axe trees in red zone area. As per data, the adjoining residential area is already suffering from pollution related diseases like asthma, lungs infection etc. Hem Raj, an elderly man, said that to beat the increasing pollution levels in the area a massive plantation drive was required but in such a scenario if one cuts green trees then it amounts not less than suicidal step which is never a wise move. He further said that increasing the business at the cost of human health will never be a prudent thought and should be avoided at all costs. Locals of the area demanded that working of the factories should be stopped at night as round the clock functioning of factories is increasing pollution levels alarmingly. After intervention of Early Times, the forester authorities acted and seized all the axed trees besides assuring action against those involved in this act. When contacted, DFO Udhampur said, "I don't know about the matter entirely but I will assure strict action will be initiated against who soever is responsible for axing green trees." |
