Two militants killed in encounter at Mujgund in outskirts of Srinagar

SRINAGAR, Dec 8: Two militants were killed while as few security forces personnel sustained injuries during an encounter at Mujgund in the outskirts of Srinagar city. Minor clashes broke out at the site of the encounter in the evening.
Reports said that police and security forces cordoned off the Mujgund area after receiving inputs that some militants were hiding in the area. As the area was being cordoned off and searched were conducted the militants hiding inside a house fired upon the joint party of Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu & Kashmir Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and army.
Reports a personal of SOG and an army man were injured in the initial gun burst of the militants. The Mujgund area falls on the Srinagar-bandipora road and also lies close to the Srinagar-Baramulla-Kupwara highway. As soon as encounter broke out the militants and joint party of police and security forces there was chaos in the area and the highway as well.
The encounter continued for few hours and culminated with the killing of two militants. The identity of the killed militants had not been established as yet and efforts are on to do the same. It has been learnt that three militants were hiding in the area. Although, two militants have been killed there is no word about the fate of third militant.
Sources told Early Times that the encounter ensued late in the afternoon when a joint team of army's 5 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation at Mujgund following inputs about the presence of some militants.
"As the joint team zeroed in the militants were hiding inside opened fire. The same was retaliated by the joint team, triggering off a fierce gunfight. The gunfight continued even after there were intervals of a lull," sources said.
The soldier and the SOG man injured during the course of the gunfight have been removed to a hospital. The two militant bodies were visible but have not been retrieved so far. The firing has stopped as of now and searches are being launched to retrieve the bodies.
There are reports that three residential houses have suffered damages during the gunfight. At the site of encounter some of the youth clashed with the police and security forces but the same were foiled and as such no injuries were reported during the clashes.
