Early Times Report

Anantnag, June 20: The sweeping staff of Municipal Committee Pahalgam on Thursday held protests against the committee officials for using fake receipt books for swindling money collected as entry fee from vehicle owners.
The employees' mostly sweeping staff took out a protest rally from the municipal office to the office of Sub-divisional Magistrate Pahalgam and demanded a probe into the alleged 'ticketing scam' that has surfaced in MC Pahalgam.
They were chanting slogans like 'We want justice and stop using fake receipt books'.
According to reports, sweepers had spotted some employees of MC Pahalgam burning a huge quantity of receipts books what they called 'fake receipt books' fallowing which they have filled written complaints in the office SDM Pahalgam.
From last two years, MC Pahalgam is manning Pahalgam Toll Plaza directly which otherwise was being auctioned and handed over to a private firm for collecting entry fee from tickets.
"Burning receipt books are definitely doubtful and the issue needs a fair investigation by Anti-Corruption Bureau as it is a grave issue," an officer told Early Times.
He said that government should also order a special audit to ascertain financial irregularities as employees working in the committee always have to protest for release their due salaries.
"Absolute transparency is essentially important for municipal committee as one fails to understand why the committee isn't generating enough revenue despite having assets," he said.
Chief Executive Officer, MC Pahalgam admitted that employees were on protest. He however said that they have pacified them by assuring probe into burning of receipts books and resolution of their problems. "They are demanding something which can't be done but yes their GP fund issue will be resolved," he said, adding that they have ordered a probe into the burning of receipt books. "We have ordered an enquiry and suspended the employee who was spotted burning these receipt books," he said.
He said that they have put the Pahalgam toll plaza on auction on multiple times but they didn't receive any response. "Now we are planning to put it on auction again and it will be done very shortly," he said.
