1/4/2026 10:41:26 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 4: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday appointed 1996-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Mukesh Singh as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the Union Territory of Ladakh.
Mukesh Singh, who was serving with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and posted at its headquarters in New Delhi, is expected to assume charge of the post shortly.
According to the official order, 1995-batch IPS officer and incumbent Ladakh Police chief S.D. Singh Jamwal has been transferred and appointed as the Director General of Police of Arunachal Pradesh.
Extensive Experience in J&K Police
Mukesh Singh has served in several key positions in the Jammu and Kashmir Police before proceeding on deputation to the Government of India. During his tenure in Jammu and Kashmir, he played a significant role in counter-terrorism operations, particularly in the Jammu Zone, where numerous terrorists were neutralised through successful operations.
As Superintendent of Police in Pulwama during the peak of militancy, Singh was at the forefront of counter-insurgency efforts. He was also instrumental in strengthening police–public relations across sensitive districts.
Singh received recognition for his close coordination with the Indian Army in counter-terrorism operations. During his stint with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), he played a crucial role in combating separatist activities in Kashmir and disrupting foreign funding networks supporting extremist groups.
While serving as Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Jammu Zone, Singh led operations that resulted in the elimination of notorious terrorist Tahir Ahmed Bhat. Following the operation, districts such as Shopian and Kishtwar were declared terrorism-free for the first time since the 1990s.
In 2018, Singh participated in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Fit India Challenge and actively encouraged police personnel to adopt fitness as a way of life. A fitness enthusiast, he has participated in several marathons, including the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.
In 2022, he launched an innovative outreach programme under which senior police officers were assigned to teach students in government schools. Singh personally taught mathematics at one such school.
Apart from his policing career, Singh is also an author and has written books including Police Operations (2015) and Curse of the Peer (2023).
Mukesh Singh has held a wide range of operational and administrative assignments, including:
Superintendent of Police, Reasi
Superintendent of Police, Pulwama
Commandant, 7th Battalion, Indian Reserve Police
SP City South, Srinagar
Senior Superintendent of Police, Poonch
Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu
Inspector General of Police, Armed Police

Inspector General, Crime
IG Jammu Zone
Additional Director General of Police, Jammu Zone
Long tenure with the National Investigation Agency

He also served with the National Human Rights Commission of India.
